I enjoy issuing little challenges for myself in blog-land that I could never complete in real life. Case in point, my "Rule of Three" Summer holiday packing experiment. The goal: pack only three of each type of item for a few days away.
In theory, I know the trick is to work in the same color family and choose items that compliment one another for lots of mixing and matching. Sadly, however, this never seems to play out when it comes time for me to travel. In the rare case that I am able to pack lightly, I always chicken out at the last minute. What if I need a pair of running shoes, or another sweater, and a back up tee? The answer: I don't.
So here I give you a long weekend wardrobe that could easily comply with even the most stringent carry-on standards. And guess what? You'll actually look pretty decent.
Three pieces of jewelry
Go for maximum impact by layering two gold, bold cuffs. I chose this pair from Pamela Love (top) and Chloe (bottom) because they're both geometric with lots of skin peeking through. I'd feel completely naked without earrings so I always wear even just a dainty pair of hoops. This particular pair is from Social Anarchy.
Three accessories for the top of your head
Buck the fedora trend and put on a simple sun hat. Eugenia Kim is always a good choice for understated numbers. For a little more drama, or a great second-day-hair cover, wrap a lightweight turban around your locks. This one's from Missoni but you can easily make your own with any scarf. Finally, frame your face with some understated sunnies in a unique shape, like these from Stella McCartney.
Three shirts (I'm serious).
One cotton sweater (your really never know), an easy cotton tee and an ultra-versatile silk shirt.
This peach sweater is from Acne. I love that it's cotton so it's not too warm, think of it as an upgrade to the same-old sweatshirt. And the color is going to look great with a little hint of a tan.
I love, love, love little-boy style tees. This one is from T by Alexander Wang, but I usually go for Vince. Can't wait to raid the Milkman's closet in a few years. But I digress...
Of course I'll pack a VAUGHAN silk shirt. This time, I've picked the Hepburn in Mary of Scotland, it looks great with pastels, neons and neutrals so it's super easy to wear.
Bottoms x 3
Did you think I'd make it through a whole post without including a pair of J Brands? Nope! So yeah, pack a pair of white J Brand boyfriend jeans. I like the slim Jakes because they're not too tight, not too slouchy. Justtt right.
I'm digging these Rebecca Taylor shorts, not only because of the pretty print but also because they'll work so well from the pool to shopping the local markets to hitting happy hour.
Here's the wild card: Vionnet. Leather. Culottes. In light blue. I think they're killer, nevermind they'll probably cost more than your hotel bill.
Three. Pairs. Of. Shoes. Only.
It CAN be done! Sneeks, flats, amazing-heels-that-stand-out-yet-simultaneously-work-with-everything.
The printed Nikes are super cute, sensible, yet not so sporty. These could probably take you all the way from your morning walk straight on through dinner.
The cute little bedazzled skimmers are H&M cheapies. Sometimes, a girl just really needs a pair of disposable summer shoes.
Finally, behold the Gianvito Rossi mules. Gorgeous.
So, three bags isn't really so difficult. In fact, I can usually pull off two, but we're on a roll here so throw a tote, a backpack and a clutch in the suitcase.
The summery, yet polished cream tote is from Dolce and Gabbana, the amazingly chic backpack is by Alexander Wang and the Givenchy clutch is lovely for a little bit o color.
Three makeup items
Okay, here's where you can call BS. I travel with pretty much my entire medicine cabinet. However, in a desert island situation, if I had to narrow it down to three pieces they would be tinted moisturizer with SPF by NARS, Diorshow Extase mascara and a YSL Rouge Volupté lip color.
There we have it! How did I do? Can anyone do better, maybe two pieces?!
