Since this weekend is Mother's Day, we've spent a lot of time this week thinking about how our moms, grandmothers, and even daughters have influenced our style.
If my own mother has a signature look, it most definitely revolves around the statement necklace, and more recently the specific VAUGHAN shirt + mega necklace combo. (Coincidentally, my very chic mother in law is also a fan of this look -- thanks Moms!!)
Sadly, I can't show you a pic of Mom in her VAUGHAN. The last time I posted her on my blog she called me and told me to pull it down. But trust, she looks amazing.
By day, Mom usually opts for a natural, neutral toned necklace. Saying "natural" and "neutral" may lead you to believe that she's wearing some dainty little chain. This isn't the case. What her daytime necklaces lack in color they usually make up for in scale. From long opera length rope and stone pieces to chunky glass chokers, they're definitely "notice-me" pieces.
This little ensemble is definitely something Mom would wear on the Cape or cruising around Maine. The foundation of course being the beaded necklace and complimenting silk shirt. Like any cute little mom she'll also wear ankle grazing capri pants, smart little shoes, a lovely pashmina and a sensible tote bag.
Mom also never leaves home without a lip gloss, which used to be half the fun of going to church with her - "forgetting" our lip glosses at home so we could borrow her more richly hued shades.

By night, the formula is the exact same but the effect is totally different.
Mom and I are both huge fans of separates. As great as dresses look, I sometimes feel that a bit of creativity is lost when one's entire outfit is just one garment. I like to be able to play a bit more with the pieces in my wardrobe and I suspect Mom does too. Dresses are just so limiting.
As separates girls, we rely heavily on dressy trousers and skirts. Like my grandmother, we both adore a classic tuxedo pant which looks so good with practically anything.
Here, Mom's got a black glass bib necklace, a sensible clutch, her signature Hepburn shirt and flats so she can do the jerk all night long.

Happy Mother's Day, Mama!
