A piece of advice I received from my high school art teacher has stuck with me: "work with what you've got".
He was teaching us not to try to change the nature of the materials we work with, but to embrace their unique characteristics and use them to enhance and complement our work. So if charcoal is messy and tends to smudge, we use it to make shadows and loose free-form drawings. We don't force a particular style that just isn't working.
I'm not going to get too deep on you, but this is pretty powerful advice when applied to just about any aspect of life.
Today, What I've Got is a major case of spring fever.
My to do list contains squillions of items and seems to be growing, not shrinking but I want nothing more than my magazines, iced tea, and some poolside action.
But sadly that's just not going to happen today. I've got blog posts to write, new samples to review (new collection coming - yay!), and a fair amount of bookkeeping. I've got to Be An Adult.
So, following my art teacher's advice, I'm going to work with what I've got. I've got spring fever, and now you've got a spring fever edition of our usual White Shirt Wednesday blog post.
All around the internets, I'm seeing tons of white on white and white on denim. I'm a massive fan of both combos but I particularly love white and denim. I think there's something so pleasing about the crisp white picking up the subtle fading, distressing and fraying on blue jeans.
One of my favorite ways to wear the Hepburn shirt is just with a simple pair of jean shorts. It's a great combination of high/low, luxe/basic, and showing/hiding skin. It's also super easy to change up the look by swapping out the shoes. The little banana printed sneaks pictured here are so sweet, I can't help but smile. Perfect for city touring or impromptu visits to the beach.
But not all destinations are really jean shorts friendly. Especially for those of us who are over 18. For those occasions, I love a nice tailored short with our Bettie shirt. Slightly less expected than a skirt and just a little off beat, great shorts can take you pretty far. I love the little pops of yellow on this pair and I think they'd look so fab with these polished Michael Kors flats.
I love pairing both looks with sunnies and sun hats, SPF and minimal makeup and whimsical little handbags.
Between the clean white shirts, optimistic pops of yellow and the banana and daisy prints, tell me you're not itching with spring fever too?!?
