Today's Unbuttoned With feature is especially exciting as we're interviewing Attica Jaques, VP of Global Marketing for Gap.
When I think of Gap, I envision basic white tees and well worn denim, styled in a very cool James Dean inpired way. It's no secret that I'm a massive fan of the classic white shirt. (VAUGHAN silk shirts will always be #1, but Gap's white tees are a close second.) It's a brand we've all been shopping since childhood and I'm thrilled to share Attica's background and her Unbuttoned With questionnaire below.
In Attica's words
I’m the VP of Global Marketing for Gap. I’ve held various marketing positions at Gap over the last 15 years.
Some of my proudest accomplishments include growing the Gap Kids/Baby business to $1B, creating award-winning campaigns for Gap Japan, developing the GapKids x ED Girls Empowerment campaign with Ellen DeGeneres (launching in stores this August, 2015), and being selected as a “2015 Women to Watch” by Ad Age. I’ve also served on the Board of Directors for the RUSH Arts Foundation and am a founding board advisor for Project Inkblot, a media consultancy focused on creating positive images of women and people of color.
Unbuttoned with Attica Jaques
Style icon: Dorothy Dandridge. She reminds me of my grandmother who was so beautiful, strong, elegant and incredibly well dressed. Naomi Sims runs a very close second.
Favorite heroine: Maya Angelou who was so wise and humble, but always believed that she still had a lot to learn.
Dream lunch date: Steve McQueen and Amy Poehler
Favorite cliché: Don’t judge a book by its cover. It wasn’t my favorite until I was at a creative agency that had a glass table filled with books with covers removed.
Personal motto: Progress requires facing challenges with a little bravery and a lot of bad-ass.
Idea that changed your life: The meaning of life is to find your gift. The Purpose of life is to give it away.
Always trying to improve: The balancing of life, love, work, family and passion projects.
Most envious of: A time in ancient Egyptian society where women were warriors and Pharaohs, standing with men in every role in society.
Most inspired by: People who are willing to risk everything for what they believe in.
Fashion item you would ban: The White Pump. It was horrible in the 80’s and I’m praying that it never makes a comeback.
Favorite piece in your wardrobe: At the moment, a gorgeous Celine heel that I found in a consignment shop in the Flatiron district for a steal. I left feeling like I won the lottery.
Biggest extravagance: Massage or Facial at Shubui Spa at Greenwich Hotel. Thank you Robert DeNiro!
Can’t bare to spend on: Overpriced Tacos. I'll take a food truck or whole in the wall Taco any day!
Irrational fear of: Getting stuck on the subway or in an elevator that is packed with people. I’m definitely very claustrophobic. Wait, is it irrational if it actually happens often?
Brains or beauty: Brains, definitely.
Audrey or Katharine Hepburn: Audrey
Jennifer Lopez or Lawrence: Lawrence (sorry, J Lo)
Diamonds or pearls: Diamonds. Diamonds. Diamonds.
