It's been called the most exciting two minutes in sports... for me, the Kentucky Derby is more like the Accessories Olympics.
Your first step in Derby dressing is anchoring your look around one major piece. I've had my eye on this Dolce & Gabanna skirt for ages. It's timeless while still making a statement and ultra flattering. The nipped in waist does wonders and the dramatic flare is so chic. It's also going to be a perfect backdrop for any accessories you want to add.
Next up: the perfunctory hat. Personally, I prefer something a bit more sleek. You'll avoid some awkward air kiss moments and you'll probably look a bit more polished after a julep or three. Hit up Philip Treacy for my personal favorites.
An ultra luxe silk shirt is a perfect topper for Derby day. Unbutton it down-to-there to show off a flashy Tom Binns necklace and roll up the sleeves for a more relaxed look. Or, stay buttoned up and shield skin from the May sun. I've gone with the bright purple/blue Stage Door blouse but there's 13 other vivid silk shades to choose from.
This punchy Lulu Guinness clutch and Lanvin spectator pumps add a bit of a visual pun to the entire ensemble. This is the perfect occasion for flaunting your quirkiest accessories. Stick to a wedge though, nothing worse than sinking into the green! And not to get too theme-y, but before trotting out there door, why not pile on some equestrian-inspired Hermes accessories?
